Larzac

The Larzac is situated in the south of the Massif Central, mainly in the department of Aveyron with a part of the Hérault region for its southernmost area.

It is the largest of the causses with a surface area of 1000 km ². Its geology is characterized by a calcareous soil (karstic type), shallow and particularly draining. Intimately linked to the phenomena of erosion, it presents on its periphery spectacular notches like the gorges of the Vis or those of the Dourbies.

This remarkable geographical area is characterized by its wide open spaces. A rural territory and emblematic of pastoral activity, the "Causses and Cévennes" area - of which it is a part - was listed in 2011 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title of "cultural landscape of Mediterranean agro-pastoralism".

This Causse has always been a land of passage, exchange and itinerancy. These open landscapes, its wild and authentic character make it a favourite destination for hiking. On foot, with a donkey, on mountain bike, Larzac rarely leaves one indifferent, if only for its landscape qualities. And the numerous routes that cross it make you love to come back...
